MEIA Celebrates 5 Years of Advancing Climate Tech Innovation, New Founders Fund for Minority, Women, and Veteran-Owned Startups
Event at Johns Hopkins University Highlighted Achievements of 50 Startups, Revealed New Funding Initiative to Support Diverse Climate Tech Entrepreneurs
COLLEGE PARK, Md. – Celebrating five years of climate innovation, the Maryland Energy Innovation Accelerator (MEIA), a program of the Maryland Clean Energy Center, marked a significant milestone in Maryland's journey towards a sustainable future. On September 10, 2024, at Johns Hopkins University’s Pava Entrepreneurship Center, MEIA gathered innovators, policymakers, and energy leaders to recognize the advancements of over 50 startups and announce new initiatives aimed at accelerating climate tech commercialization.
Since its founding, MEIA has focused on bridging the gap between innovation and implementation by helping climate tech startups bring groundbreaking research to market. Through strategic partnerships with Maryland-based businesses, universities, and research institutions, MEIA has supported the growth of more than 50 startups, many of which have gone on to secure over $50 Million in additional funding, forge strategic partnerships, and scale their technologies.
“It takes a lot to bring an idea to market, and MEIA is in the sweet spot of connecting innovation with entrepreneurship,” said Delegate Lily Qi (D-Montgomery), a strong supporter of Maryland’s clean energy initiatives. “They are helping these companies create jobs while fighting climate change. MEIA is a wonderful facilitator and enabler, and it’s exactly why the state of Maryland is excited to support it. “
During the event, MEIA recognized the first 50 startups to have participated in its program with special awards. These companies have been at the forefront of transforming Maryland’s energy economy, advancing solutions that improve energy efficiency, reduce emissions, and build a resilient, low-carbon future.
"It’s inspiring to see how far our startups have come in just five years," said Mike Ducker, Acting Director of the Maryland Energy Innovation Accelerator. "We’ve been able to connect these entrepreneurs with the resources, expertise, and networks they need to succeed, and we’re excited to continue this work as we look ahead to the next chapter."
In addition to receiving awards, startups had the opportunity to share their stories with new inventors looking to bring their products to market.
“I like the support that I see amongst these entrepreneurs, now businesspeople. We all started with the same struggles and challenges, and thanks to MEIA, we overcame them,” said Dr. Hamideh Soltani, Director of MEIA participant USPlasma Inc. “Now, we can share what we learned and help by giving back to these new startups.”
As part of this next chapter, MEIA announced the launch of its new Climate Technology Founders Fund, focusing on supporting Minority, Women, and Veteran-Owned Businesses (MWVOB) advancing clean energy and decarbonization solutions. This new fund aims to further diversify the climate tech landscape and ensure that underrepresented entrepreneurs have access to the capital and resources needed to scale their innovations.
"The Climate Technology Founders Fund represents our commitment to fostering a more inclusive and equitable clean energy ecosystem," added Ducker. "By focusing on MWVOB, we’re ensuring that Maryland’s climate tech industry reflects the diversity of our state and that all innovators have the opportunity to contribute to a sustainable future."
The celebration event also served as an opportunity to reflect on MEIA’s ongoing mission to help Maryland achieve its aggressive climate targets by accelerating the deployment of cutting-edge clean energy technologies. MEIA’s work is critical to combating the global climate crisis, and by nurturing startups and innovators, the organization is driving Maryland’s leadership in climate action and clean energy innovation. Our intention is to build the climate tech innovation ecosystem through partnerships and targeted investment in early-stage commercialization, with the vision of establishing a new industry sector—similar to the way the state grew biotech and life sciences into the economic engine it is today.
